Worried by the worsening state of electricity supply nationwide, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has met the owners of generation and distribution companies with a view to finding a solution. The meeting, which held in Abuja is coming on the heels of additional generation capacity occasioned by the recent commissioning of two National Integrated Power Projects, NIPPs, in Alaoji and Olorunsogo.
This is also in view of plans for
imminent commissioning of other NIPP plants upon the completion of these
projects. Setting the agenda for the meeting, the minister described the
Distribution Companies, DISCOs, as the vital link in the service delivery
chain.
He expressed strong commitment and
willingness of the Federal Government to continue to support the operations of
the Generation and Distribution Companies to actualise the plans to meet the
energy needs of customers in both the private and public sectors.
The Minister also stressed the need for
synergy among all power sector stakeholders. Nebo, while addressing issues
raised by the investors, said that the case was being made for Government to
keep faith with the contractual commitment to further reduction in both
commercial and technical losses, which have been a big problem in the sector
over the years.
He also commended the new owners for
their commitment and focus in revamping and upgrading inherited facilities,
which has resulted in substantial increase in delivery capacities.
