May 29 Remains Handover Date – Akwashiki

The Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, says May 29 remains date for the handover of governance from President Goodluck Jonathan to the President-elect, General Muhammudu Buhari.

Mrs Akwashiki made the clarification on Wednesday at the end of Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Jonathan.

The Minister said May 28 is just for the inaugural dinner and not the date for the transition, stressing that 29 May would remain Nigeria’s “handover and Democracy Day”.

Mrs Akwashiki maintained that “President Jonathan remains the President till 29 May when the President-Elect will take over”.

On the sack of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Suleiman Abba, by President Jonathan, she said that the President acted within his power, to appoint and sack personnel.

Mr Abba was sacked on Tuesday and replaced with Solomon Arase, who is to act as the new IGP.
Mr Arase was a Deputy Inspector General of Police and his appointment takes immediate effect.
